Job Title

When I was working for a large computer company,  I decided not to pursue a management path.  I wanted to remain as a worker bee, maintaining my technical expertise.    There was a manager from a different division who took a temporary position as a “Systems Engineer”  in the marketing group.  He was excellent at what he did.  Everyone praised his work and his knowledge.  Since this was temporary, at the end of the 6 months, he was preparing to go back to the other division.  I sat with him to ask him why he was returning to his management role in the other division after being offered a permanent position in marketing.   The caveat was the “Systems Engineer” position/title had a much higher salary range than the manager position to which he was returning.   His words to me were “Beverly, I know you may not understand but it is the title that I want.  It is important to me. ”

I had a hard time thinking about his trading thousands of dollars over time for the title of Manager.    I had learned from my then manager that there were Systems Engineer’s in the office that made more than the managers.  Knowing this solidified my desire to stay on the front lines.

Fast forward many years to today.   Being a author, contractor, business owner and at times a network marketer, my attitude about a title is different.  A title in this arena denotes knowledge, expertise, a persona or even the ability to increase your income.

Wishing to increase my potential income, I had the desire to become an Executive Director within the “LegalShield”  organization.    I had attained the highest permanent ranking, a Director.  All higher rankings required a certain amount of production each month.   I knew that when I could hit the Executive Director position month after month after month that I had made it.  I put plans in place to build an organization that would sustain that dream.

As the months progressed I would make moves forward and then I would hit a backward slide.  I issued the command:  “I don’t know how I am an Executive Director by December.  I only know that I am now and I am grateful and fulfilled.”   My intention was that it would be for my highest and greatest good.    Well, the months went on and I was no closer.  In fact, I started stepping away from the business because I was called to finish writing my book.  I could not give equal attention to both causes.    Thus my request was not granted.  I felt that something was wrong.  I asked but I did not receive.

I finished my book.  I was still attending networking events talking about LegalShield’s awesome products and I met a lady by the name of Jan.  We found we were kindred spirits.  I shared with her my dream about finishing and publishing my book and gave her a copy of Asara Lovejoy’s “The One Command.”   Jan loved it and started practicing.  We began to talk and she shared with me a new company idea that she and her business partner were going to launch.  She asked me to be a part of it.

The full magnitude of what she was asking did not register with me until a few months later.   Working with them, I put together a training program, job descriptions, mission statements, vision statements and so on.  I found my first 5 managers for the organization.    We all met in the same room on Monday.  Everyone is excited however they could not be as excited as I was when I found out that my title, in this soon to be announced organization was . . . . . . . . .

Executive Director of Liquid Life Coaches.

You see there are times when God’s plan is not our plan.  The Executive Director position with LegalShield was not for my highest and best good.  Sometimes He says, “I am going to give you what you asked for however not in the way that you expected.  It will be better.”   This Executive Director position allows me to live my purpose of helping others achieve their dreams.  I asked and it arrived not in my way or time but His.

Thank you for visiting with me today.
